Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Treatments

Intense Pulse Light (IPL) is a bright light which a filter is placed in front to filter out all wavelengths of light except those which are absorbed by blood vessels and pigment. IPL differs from laser because it is not as focused and is not a single wavelength of light. IPL is effective for treatment of pigmented lesions of the skin and small blood vessels, called telangiectasias. IPL has also been used for hair removal. Either application usually requires multiple treatments for optimal results.

Care must be taken before treating pigmented lesions to ensure that they are not cancer. Biopsy may be necessary in certain circumstances before IPL treatments can be initiated. Therefore, evaluation by a trained physician is always necessary.

There is minimal discomfort during most IPL treatments, often feeling like being stung with a rubber band. After the treatment, a mild amount of redness can be expected and some pigmented lesions may become darker before flaking off and lightening. If multiple treatments are required, they can be performed once every 4-6 weeks. Sunlight should be avoided after treatment while the skin heals and it is very important to wear sunscreen of at least SPF 30 at all times.
